Pre Wedding Shoot; What is It?

You’ve chosen a photographer, are about to pay your deposit and you’re on track to getting great pics of your big day. You are offered the option of a pre wedding/engagement shoot, but what is it?

Basically, it’s a chance for the couple and their photographer to get together in the run up to the wedding and have some portrait photographs taken. These are usually shot at a venue of the couple’s choosing. Sometimes the shoot is included in the package price, sometimes there is an extra charge. There may be a charge for any digital images and prints the couple choose, although these might also be included in the price.

You may be thinking that’s all fine and dandy but what’s the point? There are several reasons to go ahead and book a shoot:

  • These shoots can be a great way to get to know your photographer.
  • You can see your photographer in action and make sure you have made the right choice.
  • The photographer can get to know you, your likes and dislikes and how comfortable you are around the camera.
  • If you are worried about looking unnatural or “cheesy” in you wedding photographs then this is a great way to see how you stand, smile, pose, etc. If you don’t like what you see you can practice until it feels and looks right.
  • If you have had a pre-wedding shoot you are far more likely to be relaxed around your photographer on the big day.

Talking from a personal point of view, when I got married a pre wedding shoot wasn’t just a nice thing to have – it was a necessity. I absolutely hate having my photograph taken, in fact I usually hide when I see a camera. So, being front and centre for hundreds of shots made my blood run cold. Spending time with Raul, our photographer, meant that I was more relaxed and actually enjoyed the experience when our big day arrived. And we did end up with some pretty cools pics, one of which we had blown up and used for our guests to sign instead of a guest book.

You will need to talk to your photographer and each other before deciding if a pre wedding shoot is right for you. But, if time/budget permit, I would recommend going ahead.

A Fun & Colourful Yet Sophisticated Wedding

University sweethearts Cailyn and Matt created a day that was laid back and full of personality, yet impeccably stylish too. Full of quirky details (ahem the gold animal place setting – Pin!) and the most divine Pronovias Atelier wedding dress, be prepared to swoon…

Impactful and fun…yet utterly timeless too. With thanks to Caroline at Asteria Photography for sharing.
