Tara & Simon : A Cornish Together Session on the Beach

Cornwall engagement photography for couples in love by Marianne Taylor.

Ah, Cornwall in the Spring! In the beginning of March, I got to spend some time with Tara & Simon, who are getting married next month at their beautiful house in North Cornwall. The couple wanted their engagement session to take place on their local beach (how amazing is it to live in a place where you have a local beach, or five!), so we headed down to Constantine Bay.

To me, there’s really nothing better than a walk on the beach smelling the sea air and listening to waves crashing in. Needless to say, I enjoyed every minute of this session!

I can’t wait to see these two tie the knot in just a month’s time, it’s going to be a good one!

Wedding Photographer – Project Valentine

Hello to Project Valentine who sent us these beaut engagement images of this cool and quirky couple Clarrisa and Richard. So we asked Jack to let us know more about this awesome shoot and offer his advice when it comes to shooting before the big day. We love to hear different photographer opinions as all are different in style. See what you think….

About Clarrisa and Richard

How we met:

Richard and I met at high school in Rochdale when I moved to a new school in Year 10. We had mutual friends and would hang out, we started dating at the start of the GCSE exams (May 2004), we were each other’s first kiss!

We managed a long distance relationship during university years when I went to Central Lancashire University and he was accepted at Sheffield University.  After a few years, I moved to London for work and Richard followed a year later.

How we got engaged?

We have always known that we will get married eventually, we didn’t want to put too much pressure on each other to have the “perfect proposal”, so on the 5th of  December 2015 we agreed to both go to Hatton Garden in London to see if there was a ring that we fancied.

I know that I wanted a trilogy ring and had done some research beforehand. We found a ring that I saw online at Bernstones shop and the ring happened to be in my size so we were able to take it home with us. Yay!

There was a storm brewing in London- it was so windy that day so we had to go home back to our flat in Finchley, we sat down on our couch and Richard turned to me and popped the question! Even though it was expected, it was still very emotional, we were both shaking and giggling to each other. When we rang our respective families and close friends about our engagement, and they all said the same thing: “finally!” We got engaged after 12 years together!

Where and why you picked the wedding venue?

Our wedding date is in May 2017, the month of May is quite important for us, it’s the same month of our anniversary and it’s also Richard’s birthday month. We also love the idea of a mid-spring wedding.

We are having our wedding ceremony at Richard’s local church where a lot of his family got married and where he was christened as a baby.

As for the wedding reception, we picked the Wellbeing Farm in Edgworth, Bolton. We wanted something that’s rustic, in the countryside, and had lots of green spaces. When we met with the owner of the Wellbeing Farm, Celia Gaze, and showed us around the farm, we were immediately smitten with the venue. You can tell how passionate the owner was of the farm, the barn where the reception will be held and of the animals on the farm- they have llamas and donkeys!

We also found that the venue already has lots of props and decorations that we can use for our wedding so that meant saving money on things like fairy/festoon lights hire, glass jars and vases and an amazing cake and sweets cart!

What you got out of the photoshoot?

Richard and I aren’t the most photogenic of couples as we find having pictures done quite awkward. Being given a chance to get used to being photographed together before the wedding has been helpful for both of us. It helps take some of the anxiety away on the big day, and it also gave us a chance to spend the time to get to know Jack our photographer and for him to get to know us.

Richard and I couldn’t stop laughing and giggling during the shoot, but it made us more confident to be more natural as the shoot progressed.

Project Valentines Advice

Why should I have a couples shoot?

A couples shoot, pre-wedding or engagement shoot (call it what you want) is perfect for some couples but not for all.  I usually find that the couples that opt to have a couples shoot are a little nervous about having their pictures taken on their big day, so it’s a great way to shake those nerves and to spend a little time in front of the camera to get a feel for what it’s like.  Others want to use the images for their invites or even to have an image framed for the wedding day to have everyone sign around it like a guestbook.

From a photographers point of view, it’s great to spend more time with couples to learn more about them before their big day and to build a strong rapport.  It can make a huge difference on the day having spent that little extra time together before the wedding so it doesn’t feel like a stranger is arriving, the reason I always meet couples at the time of booking and again just before the wedding!

What should I wear to my couples shoot?

It always looks great when couples wear their Sunday best.  Dressing smart not only makes the couple feel more confident but it also looks much better in the photos.  I’d always advise speaking to your photographer to see where you are having the shoot and then avoid clashing colours with the background.  If you’re planning on having a woodland shoot then avoid wearing too much green or brown as you could blend in the setting!

Why shooting in Manchester offers so much.

Manchester as a city offers so many backdrops that you’re spoilt for choice.  Yes, it’s a busy area, but once you see past the chaos you can find some awesome backgrounds to work with.  From the amazing graffiti in the Northern Quarter to the elegance of the town hall and Albert Square there really is a setting for any type of shoot.  If you explore enough you’ll even find some greenery!!

Russian Inspired Styled Shoot with Flower Crowns by Kesali.com

When our studio photographer friend Danni of Maytree Photography asked us to collaborate with her on a shoot we jumped at the chance.  Danni recently gave up her career as a Schoolteacher to fulfil her dream of being a full time photographer and she’s really passionate about her work.  We adore her edgy style and honest approach too.

Justine from Kesali Flowers left us all speechless when she rocked up with a dead flower crown (In a good way).    All of Justine’s flower crowns were equally stunning but we particularly loved the dead one and it now sits proudly on our studio wall after we snaffled it.

I adore the quirky Ukrainian inspired styling of this shoot with the bright and yummy colour palette, prints, and vintage tablecloth backdrop,  for which Danni and Justine must take all the credit.  Natty and I just rocked up with our brushes and did our thing, and model Jessica Fletcher is one of our favourite models to work with so it really was easy work for us.

We cant wait to with Danni again in the near future…..

Florals & Cakes for A Stylish 70s Inspired Boho Hackney Wedding

If you’re a fan of food, florals and boho style, then the Hackney wedding of Khaly and Martin ticks all those boxes and some. A beautiful boho bride, floral bridesmaids, afternoon tea and a dessert table that Mary Berry would be proud of.

Stylish Boho Hackney London Wedding by Lisa Jane Photography

I think it goes without saying that Khaly’s bridal style is effortless, boho elegance at it’s finest. The original vintage 70s off the shoulder layered lace gown is relaxed but feminine and with her dark flowing locks, soft metallic eyes and that incredible headpiece by Joanna Reed she looks every inch the perfect boho bride with her dashing groom in blue. Not to mention her girls looking fair maids in their floor length dark floral dresses (from Marks and Spencer’s would you believe, just goes to show keep your mind open!),

The super cool boho chic backdrop of photographic location The Roost in Hackney was not only a local venue for them, but one that complimented this couple’s style perfectly. Ending the night with a DJ dance party in the basement and a pizza van is a pretty good way to see the evening out I say.

Also worth noting to anyone thinking about speeches, and how you imagine they’ll be a few minutes each at the most, as these guys prove, they can go on for over an hour so you might want to keep that in mind! Sounds like they were worth every minute.

Launch of the Mazda MX-5 RF

We Host The Launch Of The Brand New Mazda MX-5 RF

Mazda MX-5 RF launch

This month we played host to the UK launch of the Mazda MX-5 RF. Around 90 journalists, over the course of three days, were flown by private jet into Exeter airport where they picked up one of the brand new cars. They then drove to The Great Barn for lunch, as well as a presentation about the new range. The all-new Mazda MX-5 RF Retractable Fastback will go on sale in the UK on the 4th March 2017.

With a limited run of just 500 cars, the six model range will be heralded by the flagship Launch Edition. Powered by a 160ps 2.0-litre SKYACTIV-G engine, the Launch Edition is marked out by its unique twin-tone roof, 17” BBS wheels, black door mirrors and black rear spoiler.

Available with a choice of free-of-charge Soul Red or Machine Grey Metallic paint, it also comes with a Safety Pack as standard, while the exclusive feel continues inside with Alcantara trim and Recaro seats.

Alongside the new model were 4 vintage Mazdas all of which had been delivered by a huge juggernaut which parked up by the racecourse, the cars one by one were then put into a trailer and brought down into the valley. The two big double doors at the back of the Barn were opened and the cars pushed in. John then did a brilliant job lighting them. Two other cars were parked outside next to the big front doors and when all the journalists had arrived, the courtyard was filled to the brim with amazing sports cars!

While the journalists looked at the cars, we filled them full of a delicious Dartmoor Kitchen lunch, coffee, cakes and fruit. They then climbed back in their cars and drove across Dartmoor, arriving at the Salcombe Harbour Hotel for dinner and an over night stay.

If you are interested in hiring The Great Barn (or its smaller sister, The West Barn) for your next conference, event or product launch, just give us a call or send us an email with all the details.

West Dean Gardens and West Wittering Beach Laura & Matt

Hot off the presses from yesterday is Laura and Matt’s pre wedding shoot.

March is a risky time of year to plan anything outside, you never know what the weather will be like and rain was forecast either side of their shoot time. Even though it wasn’t raining there was a lot of fog about.

We started off at the National Trust’s West Dean Gardens in Chichester which is a stones throw away from their wedding venue, Farbridge.

Even though spring hasn’t sprung yet there was lots of colour, shape and interesting spaces to shoot in. This was my first time there and I was really surprised by just how big the place is.

For our next location we went to West Wittering beach and this is where the sand, beach huts and the colours all came together. The fog also really added to the atmosphere of the shots and being March, the beach was really quiet so we weren’t distracted.

It’s always nice to have a lot of variety with my couple shoots and we were spoilt yesterday. Here are some more images from their shoot:

The Barbican Centre Sarah & Ian

The Barbican had been on my radar for a while leading up to Sarah and Ian’s wedding. The post apocalyptic 80’s system built structure really floats my boat and sparks off memories of the old films they used to show at 6pm on BBC2.

They got married in the first week of February so the inside added a strong contrast to the cold and grey atmosphere outside. We were in a slightly surreal setting and such a beautiful one at that.

As a result of Sarah and Ian meeting on a bus they made up a replica front end as a backdrop for the ceremony and it looked really cute there. After a few readings the reception kicked off, photos and dinner followed.

We used most of the Barbican for photos and in the evening used the theatre area too. It was a different place at night!

It was an experience being somewhere like this. It’s such an unusual venue and I’m looking forward to going back!

The Banking Hall London Polly & Ben

It goes without saying that if I shoot a wedding on New Years Eve I’ll certainly be seeing in the new year with everyone there. What better place to do so that at someones wedding, (there’s usually a lot of free cheese around too).

This was the case last NYE when I was covering Polly and Ben’s wedding at the Banking Hall in London.

The venue is pretty much opposite the Royal Exchange in Cornhill so you couldn’t get any more London if you tried to.

It was black ties all round for their wedding and a lovely to experience to be a part of. Polly arrived with her family via London routemaster while Ben was waiting at the end of the marble aisle for her.

The venue is such that the walk to Ben was a long one and this started from the top of the staircase. The music played Polly in and they tied the knot a little past 4pm.

Straight after we had a big group shot on the stairs and some confetti outside before the usual photos and mingling took place.

Their band sang the night away as Polly and Ben danced together before the dj took over and saw the New Year in with a large number of confetti cannons fired from the DJ box when the clock struck midnight.

It was a lovely wedding and something that little bit more special because we saw in the new year with them.

Here are some more photos from their day:
