Springtime Family Session in London

London family photography by Marianne Taylor.

It’s that time of year when I get to make frequent trips to London, both for weddings but also for sweet Family Sessions like these. I’ve photographed Marie & Jens a couple of times over the years, but this time was made super special by the addition of little Oscar. We had to do some serious cajoling to get this little man in the mood for photos, but when he did… well, just look at that adorable smile!

I would also like to thank the kindly pigeons of St James’ Park for their assistance in ‘operation smile’. 😀

NKOTWB – RITA COLSON BRIDAL DESIGNER

Introducing Rita Colson.  It has been a little while since we’ve showcased a NKOTWB (New Kid On The Wedding Block) but this creative West London fashion designer cannot be ignored.

rita colson

The Rita Colson 2017 debut Bridal Collection look book was captured by one of my favourite fine art photographer’s Cecelina Photography at former chapel and instagram hot spot, The Asylum in Peckham.  That raw, textured space with its abundance of natural light was the perfect juxtapose to the softness of the satin and silk crepe designs.  The old as a backdrop for the new.

And these cold shoulder pleats are certainly something I haven’t seen before.  So statement but with the streamlined gown it is not over the top.

Rita explains “My debut collection is inspired by my love of bold silhouettes, vintage, and playful textures. A collection that celebrates the craftsmanship of intricate beading, appliquĂ© of 3D flowers over lace cleverly styled and put together.”  I personally love these little jackets too.  In my planner life I’m working on more and more Autumn and Winter weddings and these are such nice alternatives to a fur stole or fluffy wrap.

It is a well-crafted, elegant bridal collection that has a sense of luxury.  Not trend led but still thoroughly suited to the modern bride.  There’s even this wonderful jumpsuit design.  I wish I could wear a palazzo pant!  And importantly all the materials used to create these bespoke one of a kind pieces are ethically sourced and sustainable.

The Rita Colson 2017 Bridal Collection is available as both a made-to-measure and customisable service.  Alternatively you can also head to Rita’s West London based for a fully bespoke wedding dress service.  To see more of the collection and find your nearest boutique, head to – www.ritacolson.com

Elmore Court Sophie & Adam

I’ve been itching to cover a wedding at Elmore Court for years and while I shoot a lot of weddings in the west country Elmore court had escaped me…until this May.

I started the day with Sophie in Quedgeley before heading off to see Adam and the guests at the Rose & Crown – with the view to follow the boys down to Nympsfield Church. Once at the church I was really impressed, it’s a typically classic english church, with a nice long walk down to the entrance and a semi isolated setting. A pretty place to be!

Once Sophie arrived with her dad, the ceremony started and after they had some down time with their guests. Then we went to leave for Elmore Court, but first, we had a bit of tradition to cover. The Lynch Gate was tied and we had to bribe the children on the other sided to be freed.

This was a new one on me, so I did some digging and the origin and ‘purpose’ of the custom, relates, from the groom’s point of view in that he has to pay ‘bride-price’ to the bride’s family, for taking their daughter away (as they were bound to hand her over with a dowry), this is a ‘final payment’ demanded by the children of the village, for losing a ‘sister’.

So there you go, smarter every day.

The church was nice but I was totally spoilt once at Elmore. Sophie and Adam couldn’t of timed their wedding date better. Everything was in full bloom, there were bluebells and the grass was freshly grown and long with masses of cow parsley to hide amongst.

Once they’d had some time with their guests we went off to these spaces for photos and I got spooked a couple of times as there were pheasants sitting in the field. I was taking the lead and every now and again one would sqwauk and flie out. Much to everyones amusement. Ha.

Family formals and dinner followed with the evening progressing at is normally would. It was a beautiful day with an awesome group of people and beautiful venues. As perfect as you would expect it to be!

Here are some more photos from their day:

London Southbank Family Session

London family photography by Marianne Taylor.

It was so much fun popping into London to meet up Sirpa & Timo (whose elopement I shot allll the way back in 2011!)  and spend some time documenting them on the South Bank with their son Sami. I love catching up with old clients and hearing about what’s happening in their lives. It also feels super special to get to capture new important moments for them to treasure in the form of a family session.

The weather might have been a bit drizzly and grey, but it sure didn’t dampen the smiles!

Bright Bohemian Yurt Village Wedding

TropicalfestivalweddingessexChloeLeePhoto-53

At the height of summer last year, Hannah married Cal in one of the coolest and most colourful weddings I have ever seen! Mashing up various elements, all of which were truly them, we are treated to some seriously fun wedding styling!!

And this wedding also gave me one of the sweetest ever answers to my question, ‘is there anything you would change about the day?’ Cal said, “the only thing I’d change is the space-time continuum in order to live that day over and over.”

Awww!

TropicalfestivalweddingessexChloeLeePhoto-65

TropicalfestivalweddingessexChloeLeePhoto-17

The Story of the Wedding

The couple told me, “there wasn’t a particular theme. It was an outdoor wedding with a bright, bohemian vibe in what’s probably best described as a yurt village. Some eastern influence in the lamps and patterns of throws. Some tropical influences with pineapple floral centrepieces and macramĂ© hangers holding bromeliads. To contrast this, there were outdoor, fĂȘte-style games from Dolly Dimples Weddings and Events. Basically, we chucked in anything we saw that we liked!”

Hannah said that the best bit of the planning was, “imagining what it would be like on the day. And having an excuse to buy things I don’t need such as Moroccan lamps and plastic palm leaves!”

TropicalfestivalweddingessexChloeLeePhoto-20

Cal said, “There’s not really anything about the planning aspect I enjoyed because no matter how far in advance you do it, you’re constantly thinking there’s something you’ve forgotten.”

For the venue, they went for a private residence. “It was chosen because the grounds were perfect for what we wanted.” said Hannah, adding “neither of us is religious, so a church was out of the equation, and we didn’t want to be kept to the strict rules and timings of a venue.”

2017-05-19_0004

Favourite moment of the wedding day? Cal said, “it’s so hard to pick a specific one because it was such an all-around wonderful day. One moment that sticks out for me was during the second part of our first dance, when the entire yurt was filled with the sound of our guests, arms aloft, almost roaring the chorus to Happy Together by The Turtles.”

For Hannah, it was in to the ceremony, “because it was in a field, I drove straight up to the aisle, with my sister bibbing the horn, in my little pink convertible, ‘Babs’.”

TropicalfestivalweddingessexChloeLeePhoto-25

The couple had a celebrant. “Michelle Taylor wrote and conducted the most amazing ceremony for us, involving shots, confetti canons, and ‘sign the certificate bingo.’”

DIY was a big part of the day, and the groom even designed his suit. Hannah told me, “he’s a big Manchester United fan and was allowed one thing to do with the team, so he created a football programme-style order of service based on United Review. Our table wines had groom-designed labels, featuring Cal on the red and Hannah on the white. We designed all the stationery, too. My mum made and decorated the cake, and we asked some family members to bring a dessert along, too. Also, anything that came within a ten-mile radius got spray-painted gold.”

TropicalfestivalweddingessexChloeLeePhoto-110

I asked if they had any advice? Cal says, “try to take a moment alone—both together and individually—to help drink it all in. If you’ve planned your wedding as a perfect reflection of what you want, it’ll take something spectacular for it to not be the best, most enjoyable day of your life. It’ll fly by, so having little moments (hard to come by given everyone will be trying to talk to you) help break it up and give you time to absorb it all. Invest in a great photographer, I am so, so grateful for our photographs and Chloe was wonderful. Make the most of people around you, they want to help! Luckily, one of my best friends, Annabel, has a wedding and events hire company – Dolly Dimples Weddings and Events, so she was always on hand to help. And don’t feel you have to have a standard ceremony! We actually had a small ceremony at the register office a couple of days before so we were ‘legal,’ which allowed us to have the most amazing outdoor ceremony courtesy of Michelle Taylor.”

TropicalfestivalweddingessexChloeLeePhoto-101 TropicalfestivalweddingessexChloeLeePhoto-98

The couple had two first dance songs – my kind of couple!! – You Never Can Tell by Chuck Berry and Happy Together by The Turtles, as mentioned earlier. They walked down the aisle to Chapel of Love by The Dixie Cups, and left to What Is Life by George Harrison.

A MOËT & CHANDON WEDDING

The World’s number one champagne company is launching a collection especially designed to amplify even the most magnificent weddings.  The Moet & Chandon wedding collection consists of a range of four packages and I was invited to an exclusive dinner party with Brides magazine and fellow bridal bloggers at The Savoy to sample them.  A tough gig I know!

moet & chandon wedding

We were treated to a delightful history of the brand which is itself an enduring love story from grape to glass.  Each bottle of Moët is a blend of over a hundred wines (yes you read that right 100 wines!) which have been lovingly nurtured in their cellars; handpicked from the finest vineyards in Champagne and carefully crafted to deliver its signature combination of flavour and bubbles.  After 275 years the brand have become synonymous with celebrating and wedding toasts to happy couples around the globe.

Charla Tedrick – Awesome Alternative Bridal Shoes

IMG_1994

I have been absolutely dying to show you these shoes from Charla Tedrick for ages. When I was organising our Prom Night editorial, seen here on Bespoke Bride, I spied the amazing Blaire platforms (a pastel blue, perfectly kitschy platform that just screamed ’70s prom to me) and I asked to borrow them. Alas, I had left it too late to battle things like shipping times, but lovely Charla sent over the equally showstopping Lucille and Diamonds & Guns (loving the names!!) for our upcoming pretty punk editorial.

When they arrived, the team was blown away with how sexy fit cool amazing they were. Lucille has flowers in a clear heel, for crying out loud!!

I knew this was a brand that you all had to hear about. So here is Charla to tell you in her own words all about it!

Ooh actually just quickly before I hand over, two exciting things:

  1. There is a discount code further down this post for you
  2. You can WIN A PAIR OF THEM in an upcoming competition, OH, MY DAYS!!!! Join my newsletter to be in with a chance by clicking here.

A Bit About My Brand and Me

My name is Char Tedrick — designer and owner of Charla Tedrick Footwear, wifey, pupmommy and rock ‘n’ roller. I’ve been in the fashion industry for more than ten years, designing products in nearly every category, from graphic tees sold at Urban Outfitters and worn by celebrities such as Russell Brand and Miranda Lambert, to working under Betsey Johnson in New York City, designing a shoe collaboration for Jeffrey Campbell x Hello Kitty, and starting an in-house design program from the ground up for popular e-commerce website Dolls Kill.

After a lifetime of dreaming and scheming, I took the leap and resigned from my comfortable salaried job in the summer of 2016 to follow my dream of starting my own company. ‘Charla Tedrick’ is the namesake, collectible, speciality rock ‘n’ roll footwear brand that my whole career and life has been leading up to.

My first collection, a rock ‘n’ roll bridal exclusive, launched in February of 2017, with my fall/holiday main line collection about to start production any day now, and scheduled for a late August 2017 launch.

CharlaTedrick19

Why do you do what you do?

I really believe that some people are born to run their own business. I don’t think it can be taught and not everyone ‘has it’. But if you do ‘have it,’ it’s impossible to ignore. You find yourself impossible to satisfy when working for other people
You feel you’re working for THEIR dreams when you really want to be working for your own. I have always felt this was me, but didn’t know if I had the resources, or really the guts, to go for it. With the support and encouragement of my husband and family this past year, I DID IT! It hasn’t been a walk in the park, but I’m incredibly glad that I took the path I did.

I’ve definitely spent a fair share of time dabbling in different sectors of the fashion industry. I found years ago that I really loved working in footwear, but it wasn’t until the last handful of years that I really started to get clarity on the fact that I wanted to put my future focus there. It’s just so FUN! What woman doesn’t have at least a small obsession with shoes!? They’re like trophies for us. Even if we wear them once, we covet them like collectibles, and that’s exactly what I want to continue creating for as long as possible.

CharlaTedrick-17

Why Charla Tedrick Footwear is perfect for Way Out Wedding readers

Charla Tedrick is for the pretty rebels and leaders of the pack! If you’re looking for something safe and quiet, this is probably not the brand for you. If you’re looking to make a statement, make a scene, make a ruckus, any and or all of the above, we’re gonna get along just fine.

Teaming up with Way Out Wedding has been a no-brainer! We’re both reaching out to those who colour outside the lines and have the desire to put their own personal stamp on their best day ever. Hopefully we can help.

CharlaTedrick-11

What are you most proud of in your business so far?

There really are so many things. Each day that I wake up and come sit down at my office to get started, I’m somewhat in disbelief that this is my life. I think just taking that big initial step is one of the things I’m most proud of. Anyone who’s done it (or has been trying to), knows how incredibly scary that step can be. It is quite risky, and could be a huge mistake. But you’ll never know if you don’t try. And if it were easy, EVERYONE WOULD DO IT!

I recently went to my first shoe show and was really proud of getting through that experience. It can be incredibly intimidating walking into that kind of setting with a bunch of huge brand names and seasoned sales vets. I put one platform in front of the other, had a great showing, and will never have to go through that first time experience again.

CharlaTedrick-10

Do you have a tip or hint for those getting married?

Try to be in the moment! It’s so easy to get flustered with so much going on. Despite what anyone says, I also feel it’s totally okay to sweat the small stuff. After all, this is one of the biggest days of your life and probably something you’ve been fantasising about for YEARS. It’s okay to be specific, particular and know what you want. But do try to keep in mind the bigger picture, and don’t let the little stuff take away from the memories you’re going to have for the rest of your life.

CharlaTedrick-9

Way Out Wedding readers take a special 15% discount on all orders using the code ‘CTWOW’ at the checkout!

Fun Q&A!

The couple that orders my shoes is
I’ve actually seen an incredibly wide range of customers. Generally speaking, it’s someone who likes to have fun with fashion, enjoys novelty and the collectibility aspect.

CharlaTedrick-8

My design inspirations come from
Everywhere! Most of my ideas just come from my head. But I can come up with a concept of a shoe, or even a whole collection, from just seeing a fabric or a trim
some kind of funky hardware piece. Where I do NOT seek inspiration
Other designers. Trend websites. Supposed fashion forecasting. Who are you to say what’s gonna be cool a year from now? Are YOU even cool?! What does cool even MEAN?! And if ‘greenery’ is the ‘colour of the year,’ are we all going to drink the Kool-Aid and design collections full of GREENERY so everything looks the same and customers have absolutely no variety!? It’s so silly. I design products that I think are clever and aesthetically pleasing to ME. Not everyone’s going to like it, and that’s totally fine. But I’ve found a lot of people do, which is amazing. I’m just gonna keep doing what I like because the minute I start designing what other people think I should, I might as well quit and go work for someone else’s company.

191_IMG_2789

I set up my business because
It was something I always dreamt of doing since I was very young. I’d spent many years getting positive feedback from my ideas and my design work, having products I designed in huge retailers across the world, but never being able to walk away from the experience with anything at all
no recognition of any kind, no monetary gain, and often feeling somehow empty as a result. I started to really entertain the idea, and figure out how it could work, to start my own brand and own company. I created a picture in my mind of what my whole life looked like – business, family, future, and have just started chipping away at making all of those ideas come to fruition. So far so good!

152_IMG_2567

The next adventure for my business is
I’m really excited for the release of my next collection, Fall/Holiday 2017 — available this August. While it was fun to start with the bridal collection, I’m anxious to share this collection that is truly my bread and butter: funky, rad, rock ‘n’ roll footwear that is special, but still everyday. I really think it’s gonna go over well, and I can’t wait to show you guys!

Garden wedding in Cornwall

Cornwall garden wedding photography by Marianne Taylor.

I can’t quite express how much I love photographing weddings local to me. I moved to Cornwall for its immeasurable beauty and relaxed lifestyle, and Cornish weddings tend to reflect these very same qualities.

Tara & Simon got married in a beautiful marquee on the lawn of their own house in St. Ervan in North Cornwall. The day started in Tara’s own bedroom, with getting her hair & makeup done by the Pop Up Salon, before stepping into her Jimmy Choos and beautiful Claire Pettibone gown.

The morning looked a bit overcast and gray, but after the ceremony at St. Ervan Parish Church the sun broke through and brought with it the most beautiful golden evening. The simply stunning marquee by LPM Bohemia was beautifully decorated with flowers by Ginny’s Flowers, while Emma Easdon from Cornish Bluebird made sure things ran on time and Jack Bristow was in charge of catering all the delicious Cornish food.

While music from Mountain Ash mingled with the excited chatter inside the marquee, and the early spring sun stretched its beams over the beautiful countryside, I couldn’t help but feel like I had the best job in the world.

Thank you for having me, Tara & Simon! I wish you many happy surf-filled years together in your bit of Cornish paradise!
