A Magical Wedding

So much love for Jennifer and Marc’s wedding. The theme? A mix of things they love – from a touch of pink to some Game of Thrones and more than a little bit of magic. Sounds pretty perfect to us…

How did you two meet and become engaged?

Marc and I grew up in Nairn and were in the same year at school, however it wasn’t until I moved back home after Uni that we started going out. We were together for 7 years before getting engaged and whilst it was something we had talked about (a lot!) it still took me by surprise when it actually happened.

It was on a warm Sunday afternoon in June 2016 when we were getting ready to go to my mums for dinner, Marc put on his huge jacket and I kept saying to him that he would be far too hot and would only need a t-shirt (little did I know that my ring was in his pocket and he wanted it to be kept hidden!)

About 5 minutes into our walk along the river he proposed and I was in such shock it took me a good few seconds to actually say yes! It was so special as it was just a normal walk, no make up and with wearing my comfy trainers I could never had predicted he was going to ask me to marry him. However, it soon turned into the most special day with champagne flowing until bedtime!

How did you pick your wedding venue?

The Kingsmills Is a luxury four star hotel in Inverness. It is a beautiful building and one that I drive past each day to go to work. A close friend of mine was married here two years ago and I remember telling everyone afterwards that it was the best wedding I had ever been to, this was largerly down to the efficiency of the staff at the hotel.

The gardens are spacious and beautiful and the function suite is tastefully decorated to allow for a unique feel when you add your own wedding accessories. As soon as we met with the events coordinator Rebecca we knew this was the venue for us. We are both big foodies so it was vital that the menu reflected this, we met with the chef who helped us pick a traditional meal with our own twist and I honestly think the food was even better on the day than when we had our tasting session back in Spring.

Throughout the day we felt very looked after, in fact I remember taking my shoes off late in the evening and immediately being asked by a member of staff if I would like them to be put to reception so I didn’t lose them! These little touches helped make the day run so smoothly and therefore left me completely stress free, bliss!

Our wedding day was inspired by…

Us! We had various touches throughout the day that reflect the things we love. Our table names were inspired by Game of Thrones, with name cards being designed beautifully by a close friend of my Mums.

I love pink and our cake and flowers were in blush tones. The magician and comic book touches were down to Marc as he loves anything magical. It sounds like a real mix of things, and it was! However, it worked, as nothing was “overdone” it was simply nods in the direction of what we love.

Tell us something surprising about your day?

As soon as we got engaged Marc said “I don’t care about anything else, we are having a magician”. There was a magician at a friends’ wedding a few years ago and Marc loved it so I think this inspired him to have one at our wedding!

He found local man Clive through a wedding fair and later we found out that this is who the hotel recommend when people ask for additional entertainment. Clive was a huge hit and his close up magic tricks had even the most sceptical people mesmerised.

Marc and his brothers are huge comic book fans and therefore we wanted to add some superhero aspects to the day. Marc sourced a local lady Claire McPhee, who made paper roses out of comic books for 11 of the wedding party. Each rose was from a different superhero comic character with Marc (naturally!) being Superman. These were a lovely twist on tradition and something that everyone can keep.

How did you discover your photographer?

I met Carole-Ann at a wedding Fair in Eden Court in Inverness not long after Marc and I became engaged last year. I was immediately drawn to her table where she had set out these incredible photos, no gimmicks or props just amazing, high quality natural shots that blew my mind! I was at the fair with my mum and sister and I am afraid to say that without even consulting Marc I booked her there and then! In my defence I knew Marc would love her relaxed style of photography so was confident in making this decision on my own.

The rest of that evening was spent pouring over Harper Scotts instagram and website being mesmerised by these alternative and truely beautiful photos. As the wedding approached Carole – Ann sent me lots of useful information to think about and a handy questionnaire to fill in, we emailed regularly and the night before the wedding chatted on the phone about how the day would run.

When Carole-Ann arrived at my Mum and Dads the next morning she was calm among the (slight!) chaos and immediately fitted right in. I felt no pressure to pose or rush and could simply enjoy the morning. This continued throughout the day and into the evening where Carole-Ann was both professional and incredibly efficient .

The biggest thing for both Marc and myself was that we did not want to spend the day posing for photos when we could be with our friends and family, Carole – Ann ensures this is the case by seemlessly moving throughout your day, capturing the most intimate, romantic, funny and candid shots without any stress for the wedding party, which may I add included 4 boys aged 7months- 7 years!

We recently recieved our photos and couldn’t be happier with each and every one. They are simply beautiful and looking through them brought back every emotion we felt on our special day. The biggest problem we now have is how on earth do we choose which to put on the wall!

And how did you choose your flowers?

When it came to the flowers I have to admit I was pretty clueless! I knew I wanted peonies in blush pink but apart from that I took the lead from our florist. She created amazing bouquets for myself and my bridesmaids consisting of blush and cream peonies as well as gypsophila and i was delighted when they arrived on the morning of the wedding. Our gorgeous niece Arla was our flower girl and she had a head band made of gypsophila which was great as it could either be worn or carried depending on how she felt.

From visiting several wedding fairs I knew I wanted simple table centre pieces so our florist used gypsophila on tall silver candelabras. The look was simple, clean and elegant exactly as i had hoped. Our bouquets were then used at the top table, placed in vases and when I sneeked at look in the room before we sat down for dinner the overall look was beautiful.

We love your dress – how did you find it?

I found my dress in the second shop I visited (Forever Bridal). I think it was only the third or fourth dress I tried on but as soon as I saw it I knew it was the one. Luckily for me it was in the sale so I felt I got a bargain! The girls who own the shop are so helpful and really know what would suit your body shape which is why I think I found my dress so quickly. They also helped me pick my belts and veil, all of which complemented the dress beautifully. Naturally it needed several alterations and these were carried out about 6 weeks before the wedding, resulting in a dress that fitted me like a glove. I was delighted with the overall look.

And Marc’s outfit?

Marc chose the tartan “Autumn Pride” teamed with a grey tweed jacket. Marc owns his own kilt but on the day he wanted the wedding party in the same tartan and therefore used McCalls very helpful website to pick something just right. Marc’s outfit was slightly different to everyone else’s in that he chose burgundy socks and tie whilst everyone else wore navy. McCalls were extreamly helpful as we needed 13 full kilt hires on the day including our nephews and they handled this seamlessly.

Any advice?

Enjoy it all! During the planning stage take time to listen to each other’s ideas as the little touches make the day personal to the two of you. Everyone says it passes in a flash and whilst that is true we embraced each and every part of the day and took a few moments throughout just to be ourselves and reflect of what a fantastic day we were having.

Tell us about your evening entertainment…

We first heard our wedding band on New Years Eve 2015 and I remember the dance floor being full all night as they played such a great mix of music. They were one of the first things we booked and were so helpful with any questions I had.

We took quite some time to pick our wedding song and it became a bit of a joke as everytime the radio was on one of us would say “what about this?” Then Ed Sheeran brought out his new album and as soon as we heard “Perfect” we knew instantly that this was our song.

The band asked if we would like for them to perform this and they covered it beautifully, again adding a personal spin to our day. The first dance was magical and it was lovely when our wedding party joined us on the dance floor. The floor reminded full all night as the band sang hit after hit, finishing with “Purple Rain”. I would recommend Matt Gloss & The Emulsions to anybody looking for a wedding band, they were incredible!

What’s the one truly unforgettable thing about your wedding day?

It has to be looking at each other for the first time in the church, we both had tears in our eyes but huge grins on our faces, it was just the best moment our our lives.

We are loving the superhero rose buttonholes. Inspired! Alie x
