Stefanie and Mark’s Isle of Skye elopement has to be one of the wettest weddings we’ve ever featured (and being a Scottish wedding blog, we’ve seen more than a few rainy days!). We love that they didn’t stop smiling from start to drookit (as we say here) finish. From their whirlwind romance in Italy to their misty, magical wedding, their story is giving us all the feels…
Love at first sight?
Mark and I met in Verona, Italy during a vacation I took with a friend. The first time we met, we spent five hours talking with each other and drinking wine. We felt an instant connection.
The next day, I had to take my flight home and he drove me to the airport and we hugged each other goodbye for what we thought meant forever. Instead, we ended up talking every day for five months while we were apart and I eventually moved to Verona to be with him.
Two years later, we took a day trip to Venice one day and we decided to go to our favorite spot to get wine and snacks. We sat next to the canal and were watching boats go pass when he proposed!
We were inspired by…
Our wedding day was actually inspired by looking through photos of other people’s elopements! After Google searching “Scottish elopements”, I came across We Fell In Love. We both loved the photos of the couples featured and the scenery. We decided right then and there that we should choose Scotland as our elopement location.
We’re huge fans of Margaret Soraya’s photography. Tell us how it was to be photographed by her?
Margaret was truly a joy to work with. From the very beginning, she responded to all of our emails promptly and even called the Portree registration office for us, to help us get other information. She understood our vision for the photos and delivered amazingly.
Unfortunately, we had a bit of rain during our wedding day, but Margaret didn’t mind one bit. In fact, she was probably more drenched than all of us! She was so great at finding the perfect locations for the best backgrounds and letting us just be natural in front of the camera – no cheesy poses! She was on time and scouting the location the day before our wedding and we received the pictures so quickly. We couldn’t have been any happier with how our photos turned out.
Your dress is beautiful! Tell us more…
I actually ordered my wedding dress from Etsy. I wanted a long sleeved dress since I knew it would be cold in Scotland and unfortunately at the time, the stores were stocked with only summer wedding dresses.
The dress was perfect. It had beautiful detailed lace, my favorite! The pearl buttons in the back were adorable. My favorite part of the dress was the low cut back. It definitely added to the dress since the front view of the dress may have seemed a little plain at first glance.
I had was a hair vine that I ordered from Etsy as well. It was a handmade vine, with pearls, and it looked beautiful wrapped around my hair. I was very pleased with the outcome. Lynn Reilly did a great job with my hair, as well as the makeup.
And what about the groom?
We shopped around various stores for Mark’s outfit, mixing and matching different pieces together. This was probably the most stressful part of the wedding because we wanted a specific laidback, rustic look. He wanted to be a more casual groom, but not too casual.
Tell us something surprising about your day…
We were able to see seals while on our way to Loch Coriusk which was an added bonus, seeing as we are both animal lovers.
Don’t worry about having a rainy wedding. In the beginning, we were very nervous about the weather, but in the end it didn’t matter to us because we were marrying the person we love and the rain made for some great photos! As the Italians say, “Sposa bagnata, sposa fortunata!”
Because Mark is Australian/Italian and I am American, we felt that it would be easier and also perhaps a little cheaper to get married in Scotland. Since we both reside in Italy, we would have to get each document translated and the process of getting married here can take a long time.
We both love traveling, and with our family and friends spread out all over the world, we decided to make this wedding about us while crossing Scotland off of our bucket list.
What’s the one truly unforgettable thing about your wedding day?
We will never forget the midges! Also, the kindness of everyone. I feel like we couldn’t have picked better people to work with during our special day. Everyone was so nice and helpful! We even received a nice wedding present from Anne at Misty Isle Boats!
Anyone kind of hoping it rains on their wedding day now? Christina x
