Our destination bride, Jillian married her true love in a romantic (and slightly badass) castle wedding last month. And while the weather was typically Scottish, the day was everything she had dreamed of, and more. Over to Jillian…
“The big day has come and gone, and it was every bit the fairy tale I dreamed it would be! I was afraid that everything would pass by in the blink of an eye, but I must say that I enjoyed every moment of our wedding day.
“The day itself started out a bit rainy, but I took it as a good luck sign. I met up with my bridesmaids and dudes at my sister’s hotel room and we started getting ready there before taking a shuttle over to the castle. We then got to settle in at The Gatehouse, aka the most amazing honeymoon suite I could possibly imagine. Matt and his gents got together at our AirBnB in the Grassmarket, and then arrived at the castle in the afternoon so that we could get a couple of pictures/video of them getting ready as well.
“Matt and I decided to do a first look for our big day. We both wanted the opportunity to see each other before we had to stand up in front of our friends and family, plus it would allow us much more time to relax and enjoy the reception after the ceremony was over. The rain stopped, and we had beautiful light for our outdoor shots around the castle. I cannot wait to see the results! We also captured most of our pictures with our bridal party and close family members before the rest of the guests arrived and I was shuffled back into the gatehouse.
“When we finally made our way up to the Garrison for the ceremony, I was chomping at the bit to get things started! I’d seen my groom, and I was so ready to marry him for real! The ceremony was absolutely perfect. Allestri string ensemble played Concerning Hobbits from the Lord of the Rings as we walked in, Reverend Tony Bryer led a lovely and meaningful ceremony, my friends Jon and Beth sang an amazing rendition of “One Hand One Heart” from West Side Story, we exchanged vows and rings (which an owl delivered), and then we walked out to the main theme from Star Wars. It was the perfect wedding ceremony for the two of us.
“The rest of the evening was our opportunity to party! We all happily imbibed in the delicious cocktails while our guests got to take pictures with the two owls that also attended the wedding. I must say, the owls were the biggest hit of the day. People are still gushing to us about them!
“The toasts were fun and sentimental, and then dinner was absolutely delicious. We started off our dancing with the Father/Daughter and Mother/Son dance, and then my bridesmaid Sam sang a cover of Matt and mine’s song, “Tell Her You Love Her” by Echosmith for our first dance. I may be biased, but I think she sounded even better than the original. And then The Jets…I cannot say enough about them! The dance floor was busy the whole night (which is pretty impressive for a wedding of only 58 people), and they are some of the most talented musicians I’ve ever heard! We particularly loved the ceilidh dances that they led us in.
“I must say that my favorite part of the whole day happened at the end of the night. In case you haven’t figured it out by now, my family and friends are pretty musical. I’m also a singer, and Matt is constantly saying that he wishes he could hear me sing more. So, I surprised him by serenading him with the song “I Choose You” by Sara Bareilles. I was hesitant to sing it up until the moment it happened, but boy am I glad I did. When I walked up to my new husband after the song was over, I noticed tears running down his cheeks. This is a man who didn’t believe that you could happy cry until we started dating, and who hasn’t cried in over a decade. It was an incredibly personal moment, and something I think both of us will remember for the rest of our lives.
“I could go on for another two pages about how wonderful the day was, but I’ll leave you here. I can’t wait to share our professional photos once they’re ready!”
Jillian and Matt are based in Orange County, California and chose Borthwick Castle, near Edinburgh, for their destination wedding. Jillian loves Scotland because “you can have a beautiful, romantic wedding, but it’s also a little badass!”
