Sea of Solitude – Isle of Harris Photography Exhibition

Situated in the remote Outer Hebrides off the North-West of Scotland, the Isle of Harris is a stealer of hearts. To walk on the white sand beaches and hear the waves crashing in from the Atlantic is to fall in love. Today we’re travelling to this wild and wonderful place, where one of our favourite photographers, Margaret Soraya is currently exhibiting her incredible seascapes.

As a landscape photographer living in the Highlands of Scotland, Margaret strives to capture the essence of wild and quiet places like the Outer Hebrides. Working within some of Scotland’s most remote places, she often travels solo through the islands and spends a lot of time on the beaches of Harris.

“When I go out to photograph I like to be alone,” says Margaret. “Solitude is a very important part of it for me. In fact, it goes a little further than that. It is the solitude that allows me to be at my most creative and being alone revitalises me.

“Photography gives us the precious gift of being able to step momentarily into another world, to lose ourselves and let go of our every day stresses and strains. It is my hope that viewers will be immersed in these images of Harris’ beautiful coastline – a wild land which energises in a quiet understated way.”

Many of Margaret’s photos are taken during stormy conditions. She says that when she is being battered by the elements there is no time to think of anything except the present, concentrating solely on the wild beauty of this island.

“The power of quietness drowns out a world that has become increasingly noisy and full of constant communication. I love to spend some time just listening to nature and seeing what it has to offer.

“Photography is often about fleeting moments in time. It excites me that not one of my images is repeatable. I have learnt to never say that I will go back and get that shot later.”

To commemorate her first solo exhibition of Isle of Harris seascapes, Margaret has curated 25 images into limited edition fine art books, presented in a keepsake box and trimmed with Harris tweed.

Beautiful limited edition prints are made using the Giclée print process onto Hahnemuhle German etching fine art papers. Each deckle-edged print is hand signed and embossed, delivered in bespoke packaging and ready to frame.

These fine art books and limited edition prints are available to order from Margaret’s landscape photography website and would make a beautiful gift or keepsake, especially for those who have connections with the Isle of Harris or who are planning to tie the knot there. On that note, here’s a little inspiration if you’re thinking of eloping to Harris.

The Sea Of Solitude photography exhibition runs at Talla Na Mara on the Isle of Harris until June 29th 2018. And if you’re feeling inspired to embrace, and photograph, the island’s elements yourself, Margaret will be offering photographic retreats on the Isle of Harris soon. Sounds like the perfect escape to us.
