Inspired by wild, untamed flowers and a vintage look, Karen and Peter embraced the family tartan and added plenty of hits of bold colour into their day. From the Scottish castle setting to the slate heart place names, there’s so much to love and be inspired by.
How did your story begin?
We met through mutual friends and our paths crossed many times since the early 2000s. In early 2011 we ‘really met’.
Pete proposed at home but had the good sense to let me pick a ring myself. We picked a loose diamond together, then I chose a yellow gold band with a compass setting for a slightly vintage look.
We were inspired by…
The colours in Pete’s kilt, from his ‘Hay’ family tartan, and the castle itself. Initially I hated Pete’s kilt, but… I realised that it was important to him and that it was one small detail of the day that he would want a say in, so I decided I could work with it. Plus our little boy looked super cute in a mini heirloom kilt that Pete had once worn himself!
I loved our florist, Sophie’s natural wild look and was confident to let her do her own thing with our colour pallete. She’s a talented lady and didn’t disappoint, I was thrilled with the pieces she created.
Tell us about your castle…
As soon as we visited Rowallan, we knew it was ‘the one’. We had looked at a couple of venues that had pros and cons but Rowallan ticked all the boxes. The service provided from the castle was excellent, Liz their wedding coordinator was a true professional and made the day flow with ease.
Your photos are beautiful!
We loved The Gibsons’ candid unstaged approach and were thrilled with the results, the resulting photos are the best reminder of our day and they captured the essence of it perfectly.
Although the wedding might be a distant memory, we are left with the best memories from our day. I’ve never particularly enjoyed the photography session at weddings but I really loved Pete and I’s photo session as it was the first time we could really relax. Scott and Chantal really know how to work with the surroundings and what makes an interesting photo.
We LOVE your dress! Tell us more…
My dress was a bit of a wildcard that I tried on a whim after trying another three Eleganza dresses. I ‘liked’ all the dresses but this one felt special, it felt different and exciting. It was also really soft and comfortable and had POCKETS! I had it altered for a perfect fit by ‘Fabricated Bridal’, who provided an excellent service.
I kept it really simple to let the dress do the talking. Small freshwater pearl earrings and a delicate vintage wrist watch that belonged to my mum’s grandmother and were also worn by Mum and my sister on their wedding days, a perfect ‘something borrowed’.
Laura Gray’s hair and beauty girls were amazing, not only were they great company whilst we were being made up but they went above and beyond, helping me into my dress and to get my shoes on whilst the bridesmaids were busy with their own. They really set the day up on a high for us.
And what about the groom?
Slaters supplied the wedding party’s outfits and Pete’s shirt and jacket, to go with his kilt.
Slow shuffle or big number?
Carly Simon – Nobody does it better. A vintage classic. We didn’t want something that had been ‘done to death’, we wanted something that was recognisable yet a little unique. Maire Clair from the Water Front Show Band had the perfect voice for it, she really did it justice. The band were first class and created a perfect dancefloor buzz with their awesome set list.
The small details really are everything, guests remember the little touches. Prioritise, spend your budget on what matters to you. I love flowers and don’t regret for one minute increasing the flower budget, you can always make savings on something that’s less important to you.
What’s the one truly unforgettable thing about your wedding day?
Having all our friends and family together with us for the whole day, that really is a once in a lifetime opportunity.
I love that Karen knew the family tartan was important to Pete, and ran with it. And how cute is their wee boy in his heirloom kilt?! Christina x
